El tiempo perdido jamás será recuperado. El tiempo es, sin duda, el activo más valioso. Aprovechar el tiempo no significa estar siempre trabajando o estudiando, descansar o distraerse puede ser una manera muy efectiva de aprovechar el tiempo.
El tiempo en que no podemos hacer nada, ni productivo, ni entretenido, ni interesante, es, tiempo perdido. Perder el tiempo por ineficiencia personal es penoso, a la mayoría nos sucede, en mayor o menor grado; por suerte es moderadamente fácil de corregir. Perder el tiempo por ineficiencia organizacional conlleva un costo mayor y puede ser, potencialmente, más difícil de corregir. Perder el tiempo debido a obsolescencia tecnológica, suele implicar un costo mucho mayor pero no necesariamente es más difícil de remediar.
Eliminar el tiempo perdido es una de las maneras más fáciles de aumentar la productividad, la creación de bienestar y la felicidad. A nivel personal, la pérdida de tiempo suele deberse a falta de organización, incapacidad de medición y estimación adecuada del tiempo, y en muchos casos a una sencilla falta de respeto por el tiempo de los demás. La puntualidad es clara señal de respeto por el tiempo propio y ajeno. Llevar, o incluso impartir, cursos de administración del tiempo no garantizan el cambio de actitud necesario para la puntualidad.
La ineficiencia organizacional puede (pero no debería) ser más difícil de corregir. Dos buenos ejemplos son: hacer fila para obtener un cita médica en la Caja del Seguro y esperar en el carro o autobús, mientras llegan los inspectores de tránsito y seguros cuando hay un accidente, por leve que sea.
Dada la penetración de la telefonía en Costa Rica, es totalmente injustificada la necesidad de apersonarse físicamente y hacer fila para obtener una cita médica. Para otorgar citas por teléfono no hace falta gran tecnología, no hace falta tener expedientes electrónicos ni cosa semejante, solo hace falta tener las agendas de los doctores en un medio adecuado (por ejemplo, papel). Claro que cuando esté el expediente electrónico y las agendas de los doctores en novedosos sistemas en línea, será todavía más fácil y eficiente, pero cualquier cosa es mejor que obligar a miles de personas a perder miserablemente el tiempo, haciendo fila para obtener una cita.
Un abogado me aseguró, recientemente, que no existe en Costa Rica ninguna ley que obligue a crear presas descomunales ante el menor accidente de tránsito. Es bastante obvio que cuando hay un accidente que no ocasiona daños personales, el asunto incumbe únicamente a los involucrados y a sus aseguradoras. Carece totalmente de sentido dejar los vehículos atravesados esperando el parte de la Policía de Tránsito, obligando así a cientos y hasta miles de personas a perder el tiempo de la peor manera.
Lo que haría mucho sentido es que la Policía de Tránsito le haga un parte, ojalá oneroso, a los que bloqueen el tráfico, hayan, o no, tenido un accidente.
Una de las maneras más abrumadoras de perder el tiempo es viajando hacia y desde los lugares de trabajo, todo los días. Los trabajadores de cuello blanco, los que se ganan el pan con el sudor de la mente, viajan al trabajo todos los días por pura obsolescencia. La tecnología disponible hoy en día permite que dichos trabajadores (por lo menos medio millón en Costa Rica) trabajen remotamente, por lo menos, dos o tres veces por semana.
El teletrabajo no solo evita la pérdida de tiempo, también produce enormes ahorros de combustible, mejora la calidad de aire, y aumenta la productividad (al eliminar el efecto nocivo de la perdedera de tiempo, en el estado de ánimo), y es, además, una de las pocas medidas efectivas contra la congestión vial.
Hay dos tipos de obsolescencia que impiden el teletrabajo. Las caras e ineficientes conexiones asimétricas a Internet, impiden, por ejemplo, realizar video-conferencias de alta definición. Pero, tal vez, la obsolescencia más perniciosa, es la costumbre de evaluar el desempeño de los trabajadores basados en su presencia física (reloj marcador).
No es utópico pensar que en Costa Rica pudiéramos ser puntuales, obtener citas médicas por teléfono, multar a los que hacen presas de tránsito cuando participan en un accidente menor, y disfrutar del teletrabajo intensivamente.
Estos son solo los ejemplos más obvios y de fácil solución. Sigo arando en el mar.
